At Molded Dimensions Group, we pride ourselves on our ability to create truly custom components for our customers. Customization options include visible characteristics, such as color, size, shape, and surface texture and finish. On a more technical level, our team helps customers determine an appropriate material type, factoring in: tensile strength and elongation; chemical and technical resistance; functional inserts and features; permeability; and more.
In considering part finish and appearance specifically, several factors have the greatest impact when creating rubber or urethane end-products. One such factor is the machined finish of the mold used to make the part. The best finish on a component is achieved by using highly polished steel molds, though they are expensive to construct and maintain, and thus typically only necessary for critical aesthetic or functional needs. A standard “commercial finish” comes from a machined steel mold, which may exhibit visible tool marks.
Additionally, properly releasing parts from their molds generally requires the use of lubricant, which may leave a thin film on a part’s surface, causing a shiny or greasy appearance. Lubricants can also result in slick or slippery surfaces, potentially impairing adhesion quality if not taken into account.
Of course, the specific type of material utilized affects the product’s appearance, too. Some compounds lend themselves to a bright, glossy surface, while others may be dull, or easily dulled in handling or storage. Plus, when utilized, additives also play a critical role in determining parts’ visual characteristics, including their color, texture, and clarity.
A final factor affecting a component’s finished appearance is the flash removal method used. During the molding process, excess material known as ‘flash’ can form along the seams or edges of a part. Removing flash with a precise and controlled method can provide a cleaner, more uniform appearance, whereas methods like hand trimming or tumbling may result in a less refined surface finish.
